With locations in Rockville and Towson and serving the residents of Alexandria, Potomac, Columbia, Bethesda, and the surrounding communities, Dr. John Kiely is helping his patients understand hair transplantation using a micro grafting technique.
What Is Micro Grafting?
Micro grafting is a surgical procedure in which the surgeon removes a strip of donor tissue containing skin and hair from the neck then cuts it into smaller pieces and places it in the recipient area.
Who Are the Best Candidates for Micro Grafting?
Men who have male pattern baldness as well as women with female pattern baldness and those who have had injuries or burns to the scalp that resulted in permanent hair loss have the best success with micro grafting.
How Does Micro Grafting Work?
Using a special knife with several parallel blades, your physician cuts a strip of skin with hair from your neck area then cuts that strip into smaller pieces. Micro grafting uses skin with only one or two hairs for the grafts. Each micro graft is feathered into microsurgical slits along the first centimeter of the hairline. Behind that, grafts with two to four hairs are placed to thicken the interior scalp. The desired density of hair is a personal decision about which you should talk to your physician.
How Long Does a Micro Grafting Procedure Take?
As with any procedure, the duration of the procedure varies depending on the extent of the grafting. Typically, micro grafting can take between four and six hours.
Is Micro Grafting Painful?
Micro grafting may cause some discomfort, but that is minimal. Prior to surgery, you are given an oral sedative to relax you and prevent pain. After surgery, we will provide you with pain medication to take at home the first few days following the surgery.
How Long Is the Healing Process?
The healing process varies with every patient depending on the extent of the grafting. Micro grafting typically takes the longest to heal.
How Long Before I Can Return to My Daily Activities?
Resuming daily activities depends on the individual. While some return to work the next day, others wait until the swelling has diminished and the procedure is not as noticeable. As for exercise, it should be avoided until the incisions have healed. There may be itching and crusting at the treatment site, but that usually subsides within a week to 10 days.
What Is the Cost of Micro Grafting?
The cost of micro grafting varies with each patient. During your consultation, we discuss all of your options for hair restoration as well the cost of each one so that you can make an informed decision regarding your procedure. Dr. Kiely accepts cash, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express), and checks as payment options.
